Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children or young adults hence it's sometimes referred to as "juvenile diabetes" or "insulin dependent diabetes". Type 1 diabetes is usually more severe than type 2 diabetes. Fortunately only about 10% of diabetes cases diagnosed are Type 1 diabetes as most diabetics have Type 2 diabetes. Whereas type 2 diabetes patients can usually control their diabetes with just diet and exercise Type 1 diabetics not only need to monitor their diet and exercise as well they need to have regular insulin shots and undertake blood sugar monitoring. These days blood glucose meters make it possible for the individual to self-test and monitor their blood sugar levels. Without proper self management type 1 diabetes can lead to diabetic coma and in extreme cases death.
